Routine practice builds speed. Conceptual understanding builds transfer — the ability to approach an unfamiliar question without freezing. MYP assessment rewards both, but transfer is what protects students when Diploma demands rise.
What conceptual teaching looks like in a session
- Students explain relationships in their own words before drilling
- Errors are treated as diagnostic information, not only score deductions
- Unfamiliar questions appear early — not only in the final week
- Communication of reasoning is practised as a skill, not an afterthought
Parents can ask a simple check: “Can you teach me this method without the textbook open?” If the answer is only a memorised chant, understanding is still thin.
