IB Diploma

HL/SL depth for course fit, assessment demands and advanced problem solving.

Typically Grades 11–12AA / AIHL / SLMathematics

Depth, decision-making, and Diploma pressure

IB Diploma Mathematics rewards students who can choose methods, communicate reasoning, and stay accurate under timed conditions. Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) pathways differ in breadth and intensity — so support must match the confirmed course, not a generic “IB Math” plan.

Vairavan Academy combines concept teaching and past-paper craft so students build transferable understanding while preparing for external papers.

Choosing your course

IB Diploma Mathematics pathways

Students have different needs, aspirations, interests and abilities. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) are each offered at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). The right course and level depend on the student’s interests, strengths and future plans.

Mathematics

Analysis and Approaches (AA)

  • Standard Level (SL)
  • Higher Level (HL)

For students drawn to analytical thinking, mathematical structure and the reasoning behind a solution. The course emphasises constructing, communicating and justifying correct mathematical arguments.

What students study
Functions, trigonometry and calculus, alongside investigation, conjecture and proof. Sequences and series feature at both levels; proof by induction is included at Higher Level.
Role of technology
Students develop fluency with mathematical software and handheld technology while maintaining a strong emphasis on mathematical reasoning and justification.

Student fit and level

At both SL and HL
Students should be comfortable manipulating algebraic expressions and enjoy recognising patterns and understanding how those patterns can be generalised.
At Higher Level (HL)
Higher Level students need strong algebraic skills and an understanding of simple proof. They should enjoy spending time exploring and solving challenging problems.

Mathematics

Applications and Interpretation (AI)

  • Standard Level (SL)
  • Higher Level (HL)

For students interested in mathematics in real-world contexts and its connections with other subjects. The course develops mathematical thinking through practical problems, applications and modelling.

What students study
Mathematical applications and modelling, supported by core topics such as calculus and statistics. Students explore what mathematics means in a data-rich world.
Role of technology
Extensive use of technology helps students explore and construct mathematical models and justify conjectures in the context of practical problems.

Student fit and level

At both SL and HL
Students should enjoy seeing mathematics used in real-world contexts and applying it to solve real-world problems.
At Higher Level (HL)
Higher Level students need good algebraic skills and experience solving real-world problems. They should enjoy exploring challenging problems and be comfortable using technology to do so.

Course overview adapted from the IB Mathematics syllabus guide.

Skills we help students develop

  • Select AA or AI pathways with clear course-fit reasoning
  • Work confidently at HL or SL depth
  • Connect algebra, functions, calculus, statistics, and geometry as required
  • Use technology appropriately where the syllabus expects it
  • Communicate multi-step solutions examiners can follow
  • Investigate mathematical ideas through modelling, analysis, and reflection
  • Handle unfamiliar paper questions without freezing
  • Plan revision across long Diploma calendars

What Diploma Mathematics aims to develop

All IB Diploma Mathematics courses share these aims across AA and AI, at Standard Level and Higher Level. Adapted from the syllabus guide, they describe the understanding, skills and perspectives students are encouraged to develop.

  • Develop curiosity and enjoyment in mathematics, appreciating its elegance and power
  • Understand mathematical concepts, principles and the nature of the subject
  • Communicate mathematics clearly, concisely and confidently in different contexts
  • Build logical and creative thinking, patience and persistence to solve problems with confidence
  • Develop and refine the ability to think abstractly and generalise mathematical ideas
  • Apply and transfer mathematical skills to new situations, other areas of knowledge and future developments in local and global communities
  • Recognise how developments in mathematics and technology influence each other
  • Explore moral, social and ethical questions arising from mathematical work and its applications
  • Appreciate mathematics as a universal subject with multicultural, international and historical perspectives
  • Understand the contribution of mathematics to other disciplines and its place as an area of knowledge in Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
  • Reflect critically on their own mathematical work and the work of others
  • Extend mathematical understanding through both independent and collaborative learning

Paper craft with conceptual depth

Sessions balance teaching with deliberate practice. Students learn to read questions carefully, show examinable working, and recover when a first approach stalls — then review timing and accuracy through mock cycles.

How Vairavan Academy Teaches IB Diploma

Diagnostic assessment, clear goals, instruction, deliberate practice, feedback and progress review — adapted to this curriculum.

  1. DiagnoseMap current attainment to syllabus expectations.
  2. PlanSet goals and a revision sequence that fits the calendar.
  3. TeachBuild concepts before speed and exam technique.
  4. PracticeUse targeted drills and paper-style questions.
  5. ReviewShare progress signals with students and parents.

Programme structure

  1. Diagnostic mapping and learning goals

Review current attainment against the student’s syllabus and identify priorities for learning.

  2. Topic sequencing, mocks and revision

Sequence teaching around school topics, with mock assessments and regular revision cycles.

  3. Feedback on method, timing and accuracy

Use ongoing feedback to refine working methods, improve timing and build accuracy.

  4. Topic-wise Level 1 worksheets

Topic-wise Level 1 worksheets introduce and teach mathematical concepts.

  5. Level 2 worksheets

Level 2 worksheets strengthen conceptual understanding through further practice.

  6. IB Diploma exam-style questions

Practice with IB Diploma exam-style questions helps students apply their learning to the demands of their AA or AI course at HL or SL.
