Functions sit underneath later calculus and modelling work. When notation and graph sense are fragile, everything downstream feels harder than it needs to be.

Gaps we see most often

  • Treating f(x) as “just another letter” rather than an input–output rule
  • Confusing a function with its equation or with a single graph sketch
  • Transformations memorised as slogans without linking to coordinates
  • Domain/range discussed only as a definition, never as a constraint on answers

A repair sequence

  1. Rebuild input–output language with simple tables
  2. Connect table → equation → graph for the same function
  3. Practise describing transformations in words and coordinates
  4. Only then move to composite and inverse ideas where required
