Most calculus struggle is not “calculus.” It is fragile algebra, shaky function fluency, or weak graph sense wearing a calculus costume. Fixing readiness early saves months of frustration.
Readiness checklist
- Comfort rearranging equations and working with fractions/rationals
- Fluent function notation, composition, and inverse ideas
- Graph interpretation: intercepts, increasing/decreasing, end behaviour
- Trigonometry basics and unit-circle familiarity where required
- Willingness to explain “why this method” rather than only the steps
AB vs BC is a readiness question
BC is not automatically “better.” It is denser. A diagnostic conversation should confirm whether foundations and study rhythm can support the pace before a student commits.
